Why we call lamp, LAMP??

I talked with my friend about alphabet.
Who invented alphabet, or why we call A, A?
Is alphabet the name of the person who invented it?
We talked about it.

My friend said "maybe the one who found alphabet, named Alphabet also. Like penicillin,
the one who invented it named Penicillin."

It came into my mind, why we call lamp, Lamp?
Why we didn't call lamp with the name who invented it?
Alfa Edison..

But, it's kinda funny, you know.

In Indonesia, my beloved country, if the lamp is dead, we'll say "mati lampu" or "lampu mati"
Translated in English : "dead lamp" or "the lamp is dead"
If we call lamp, Alfa Edison.
Then, our home lamp's dead, and we use 1st Indonesian sentence and translated in English.
It became so funny.
Indonesian : Mati lampu
English : dead lamp
Change lamp into alfa edison : dead alfa edison
*like we cursed him*
2nd example, if we use 2nd Indonesian sentence and translated in English.
Indonesian : lampu mati
English : the lamp is dead
Change lamp into alfa edison : the alfa edison is dead
Like he dead twice.
=D

Well, it's just a thought.
Still respect for the man, Thomas Alfa Edison, no him we don't have any lamp right now.
=)
